Brilliant from the Sheffield dwelling, Surrey Members, Carrier Bag Firm. Close questioning re pubs they planned/needed to visit revealed an apparently random hotch if not downright potch. It turned out, they'd identified some of them as they had featured in TV programmes. Including one from Danny Dyer’s Who Do You Think You Are. OK. Fair do. It's a broad church. If that's what is floating boats.
The morning after post mortem. Revealed they had a 'mare. Having schlepped from South (The Oval) to East (Mile End/Bethnal Green environs). They found the pub was closed.
Because it was being used that evening. For fucking TV FILMING. Ha Ha Ha. That sword you are living by has just killed you Mate. Brilliant.
No such issues for us. An early end to proceedings brought on by Bad Light. Ahead of what was going to be the Inevitable Handshake. Meant we headed Victoria Line. Vauxhall to Highbury & Islington. To the House Of Hammerton, 99 Holloway Road. Great place. Big open front onto the hustle n bustle. But, well organised, simple one room affair. Printed beer lists on the clipboard. Natch, I prefer a blackboard or screen. Nitpicking.
Ten of their own on keg. Nine guest keg. And two cask. (Although they've got four handpull fonts on the bar). Lots of bottles.
Hammerton, Apprentice No More on keg at 4.5%. Billed as Session IPA. Great beer. Full on pineapple tropical on the nose. Hop forward taste. Nice amount of sweetness drifts in. Still that pineapple basically. Slow burner bitterness. Got it all going on. Great.
Hammerton, Underback on keg at 6%. Billed as Vermont IPA. I like that MUCH more than other attempts I've tasted recently. It's… Well, it's just more like beer. Not particularly gloopy. Not “orange juice”. Some bitterness does hit. You know. Like an IPA. It's well balanced. Flavours work well together. Enjoyed it.
Hammerton, Islington on keg at 4.7%. Steam Lager. Not as great as I remember it. But, a lovely beer nevertheless. Slightly drying in the mouth. Peach into mandarin. But, not overpowering. All about the gentle sweets coming off the malt.
We ended the night in The Taproom, 163 Upper Street. I wanted the Five Points XPA. But, when he pulled it. All froth. He mumbled something something something gas. And put a glass over the handle. Gggrrr. I'll mark them down for that.
360 Degrees, IPA on keg at 4.3%.
To the best of my knowledge. Neither the House Of Hammerton. Nor the Upper St Taproom have featured on TV.
That Hammerton, Apprentice No More can have Standout Beer Of The Day. Easily.
Completing The Oval beer wrap. I'm pretty sure I've counted NINE (9). Plus Greene King IPA across the bars. Marvellous. What a line up.

Before the start of the morning's play. I did feel Yorkshire had it all on to get out of this with a draw. So. Salute. Because, in the end, they did. Easily. Lees was out, just after getting to his ton. 201 balls. That's how you draw. The Bad Light left Marsh stranded on Red Ink. 263 balls faced (for 125). That's how you draw. We faced 88 overs in that second dig. Salute. Batty, Meaker, Clarke all wicketless.
