A couple of nice surprises for us Academy curtain twitchers. Sort of from nowhere, Jordan Doherty is given a slot on the bench. I saw a bit of traffic on Social Media asking what position he plays. Some were suggesting defender. True that. Last season in the Under 23s, with a few injuries, a few out on loan, Travis looked to Jordan's calm head to shore up the back three at times.
But, actually, I've seen Jordan come through the Academy ranks as a midfielder. He can be a bit box to box. Got the close ball skills. Got the strength to shrug the man off. Got just enough pace. He's got a goal in him an’ all. He was nominated for the League Football Education Goal of the Season. He played U19 level for Ireland in their UEFA U19 EUROs qualifying group in March. Incidentally, so did Stephen Mallon, another Young Blade.
Despite all that. My humble opinion is Jordan's best role is in midfield, in front of the back three, getting it, giving it.
And, after spending pre season around the first team, Rhys Norrington-Davies got on for a serious time against a serious team. He came on at 62. And slotted in at left wing back. Remember, he only turned 19 in April. (He's got two Under 21 caps for Wales). Naturally, he's changed a bit physically. Basically, he's lithe, lean, athletic.
The kid did what he had to do. Fitted right in. Didn't look nervous or fazed. Did his bits. You make your own headlines & deadlines. He put (at least) two great crosses in. One of which McGoldrick got on the end of for the opening goal. Skipper Sharp immediately pointed at Rhys to let him know he'd got The Assist.
Doncaster Brewery Tap, Mucky Bucket, Black IPA on cask at 5%. Yep, all day long. You see that style less often nowadays. That was a great example. Some toast. Into bitter. What's not too love.
