We were never going to be able to leave that alone. The story they are telling goes like this. Last year, Cloudwater Brew Co. (Manchester) went on a jaunt to Yakima, Washington State in the US. They worked with Yakima Chief Hops, a network of family owned Hop Farms. Together, they selected what they thought/hoped would be some of the best hops of the harvest. Those were used to brew six Double Dry Hopped IPAs - dubbed Crop Year 18 - CY18. Six beers were launched, today, in 19 beer gaffs across the UK. One of those gaffs was Hop Hideout/Kommune in Sheffield. Two CBF were there. Yes, of course we made a fucking list. We're not amateurs. "Oooohhhh, are you going to tease us Phil. In sixth place…."

No, here's the winner;

Cloudwater, CY18 Amarillo-Centennial DDH IPA on keg at 6.5%.
It's not a helpful thing to say. But, that just tastes … American. A bit of Old Skool simplicity. The sweetness keeps coming up alongside the bitterness. Some nectarine & orange. Perfect balance.

But, it needs saying. All six were really good. Nothing to worry about in any of them. It's consistently good, perfectly balanced beers like these which make breweries stand out.

Silver. Mosaic. Nice bold flavours after smelling of peach. Rich bitterness
Bronze. Loral. A nice surprise. Icing sugar dusting on the lips. And sweetness in the finish.
Fourth. Citra. A lot of grapefruit citrus survived, but the bitterness didn't quite develop.
Fifth. Simcoe. That was nice and gentle. But, up against its Brother Hops, it veered towards bland.
Sixth, not least. Sabro-Chinook. A little unusual. Some sharpness, but softened out nicely.

As I was walking up the hill from Parkgate to Rawmarsh, my phone was pinging and confirming that Jack Lester has been appointed as Academy Manager. Replacing Travis Binnion. Anyone who has been near this Blog knows that I hold Trav in high regard. Good luck Pal. I'm sure the dust will settle. I'm more interested in the recruitment & development strategy that the Academy might work towards, than Jack L himself. Maybe some more information will emerge as tables get over feet.

I can confirm who was there at Parkgate. Del Geary organised the warm ups. Gave the team talks. And, generally did Del things on the bench & coaches area. Lester stood on the perimeter. Quietly taking it all in. He made the poor decision of standing right in front of some Carrier Bag Firm luminaries. I'm sure he'll have benefited from their "wisdom". At times, Jack asked (keeper coach) Matt Duke to join him. There was a bit of pointing. And a few quiet words. He'll obviously need to learn about his young charges.

There now follows a rare moment where this Blog requires you to have a look at this picture. Two Young Blades chasing down a Parkgate attack.

Caption
Lester - "Matt, who is he at 6?'
Duke - "Not sure Boss"
Lester - "And, what about the other lad, him at 6?"
Duke - coughs & stares into middle distance….

Mr Lester, Welcome to the Wonderful & Frightening World Of The Carrier Bag Firm.

I can confirm who WASN'T at Parkgate. John Dungworth nor Mick Wadsworth. You may wish to draw conclusions about whether they're in the same boat as Trav, in the Straits Of Hormuz.

Anyway. two number sixes notwithstanding. Hopefully, it'll be Hat Trick wallah Angelo Cappello who caught Jack Lester's eye. Angelo looks stockier & bulked up. Just growing & found the gym, I guess. A bit of low centre of gravity body strength will do him no harm. Parkgate were one up at Half Time. Sam Ackroyd, leading up top, got into some good positions and on the end of balls in. But, horrendous misses let him down. Keep going. He could have had the Hat Trick. United, and Angelo in partic, came much stronger in the second half.
