Brewer's Surprise

Retford 1 v Hallam 2
Northern Counties East Football League
Division One
Tuesday 1 February 2022

Great pre match drink in;

The Brew Shed
104 Carolgate, Retford DN22 6AS

I've been before, but the internal geography & set up seemed different somehow. Anyway, a lovely & welcoming place. Bar front there immediately in front of you as you walk in. Seating down the side. And a bit downstairs, sort of on the canal. Essentially an outlet for Harrison's Brewery. Not exactly on site. But deffo just a stone's throw.

Four of those Harrison's on Cask. Two of them doubling up on Keg. Alongside another Harrison's Keg & another five pukka Keg. On a different day, it would have been a right caper to have the Cask v Keg on those Harrison's. But tonight's not the night. I was in Cask mood.

Harrison's, Proof of Concept, IPA on Cask at 4.3%

That was great. Lots of sugar in the smell. Floral Hops up top. Lots of Hop loveliness. Although only gentle bitterness. 3.75/5

Harrison's, Pale on Cask at 4.1%

The fella gave me the backstory. The recipe based on Sierra Nevada Pale. Trial brews to see how they went in comparison to their core Pale. And then it boiled down to - they'd found a few casks they'd forgotten, and needed to sell off. Brewer's Surprise. At two an' half English. Not gonna lie. The Carrier Bag Firm were all over that. It was very nice. Simple but nice. Floral hops up top backed up by understated Peach sugar. 3.75/5

Hallam were two up in just seven minutes. At that stage, it looked like the floodgates were malfunctioning. But, Retford clawed a way back. An equaliser on 36. And, after that, to be honest, anything could have happened. I was just happy to have clung to that. Unbeaten in the league in 12. Effectively the game in hand on North Ferriby. So Hallam move 6 points clear at the top. Better goal difference by thirty fucking two goals.
