FA Youth Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Thursday 17 August 2023
Played at Brookburn Road (home of West Didsbury & Chorlton)
Although The Dabbers came out of the hat first, ongoing work on their Swansway Stadium meant the tie was switched to Wests ground. Which was nice. Because Brookburn Road became my 443rd Ground Tick. In a sense, the fact that it was a Youth Cup visit meant I didn't get the full Wests experience. Large and passionate fanbase. Flags. Banners. Noise. And, the full range of Burton Road Brewing cans in the clubhouse. One day.
Incidentally, the social media guy at Wests is a Blades Season Ticket holder. Of course, Chorlton remains a superbburb for a drink. So, we made everything fit together nicely.
Fell Bar Chorlton
518 Wilbraham Rd, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester M21 9AW
One of the outlets for Fell Brewery. A small(ish) independent brewery in South Cumbria. A great shop front bar. "Permanent" benches and tables on the pavement. The small fronted bar in the first room. And a few smaller rooms down the back. There'd been "some confusion" with stock & re-ups. So, the six Fell keg, five guest keg and four Fell cask listed on the beer board was not strictly accurate at the start of our sesh. Indeed, so many punters asking for the Helles or Session IPA that they made an impromptu A4, Sharpie and Blu Tak sign. The message amounted to OFF.
Don't mither. Because Andrew From The Brewery turned re-up in Thunderbird Six to put everything back on a level footing.
Fell Brewery, Tropical Breeze, Pale Ale on Cask at 3.4%
That suited every fucking thing. The weather. Our mood. The general situation is what I'm saying. Unfined and hazy. It tasted a bit thin at first. But, the tropical bitterness grew and grew.
In case you're only a recent acolyte to the Carrier Bag Firm. Let me tell you. We NEVER let a Cask v Keg Off go by. NEVER.
"OK, Phil, go on. I'll bite. What the actual fuck is a Cask v Keg Off?"
"A CVKO my friend is where the yeast and gunk aligns with the CO2. Where the same beer is served on BOTH cask and keg."
"Er. OK Phil. But, what is the point of that?"
"Fuck me, if you're looking for a Blog with a point, you're in the wrong place."
Fell Brewery, Collab with Friends Of Ham, Snout Better, West Coast IPA on Cask Left and on Keg Right at 4%
I have to start by saying I'm not sure how they're billing that as a West Coastie. And, then I have to say, the Cask was rather unpleasant. So, I have to pronounce Keg the winner by a no contest default distance.
A deserved win for the Nantwich Nippers. One up from a great free kick strike on 21. Pegged back one each just after half time. And they took it away from Wests Wee Uns with goals on 65 and 71.
Burscough in the next round.
