Well. That was a long way from back to normal. But, it certainly felt gooooood. A team I identify with (rather than actively support). Stood with good friends. A few other friends dotted about. Plus some haven't seen you for ages. Doable beers in the clubhouse. And, brought out onto the terraces. Some SUFC Buzz. And to cap it all, some football broke out. Hallam were still two nil down at 75 minutes. Then won 3-2, with an 89th minuter.
The Buzz was that Del Geary (SUFC U18 Academy lead coach) was going to be there. Something about "two Brazilians playing for Grantham, Wednesday have already had a look at 'em". As it turned out, I saw Academy Head Honcho Jack Lester rather than Del. Obvs, I don't know whether he was meeting his mates for a pint or scouting.
If he was pinting, his choice would have been the same as mine. Marston's Pedigree was on an unmarked stick. And there were some Bradfield Brewery bottles. With Farmers Blonde, 4% front, centre & downed by the Carrier Bag Firm. Under gentle questioning, the bar manager said the cask ale would/should rotate over the season. Let's see.
This was Hallam's ramp up game. Limited to 150. Buy your "ticket" online. Your name is on the gate. QR code to scan for track n trace. Very, very welcoming & friendly.
Grantham Town are in the Northern Premier League, Step 3. (Hallam are Step 6). This game was billed as Grantham U23. But, it looked like there were some very young lads out there. They started very brightly & looked the better side. Grantham took the lead on 20. But Hallam missed a Penalty on 26. Grantham knocked a second in on 32. Towards the end of the first half, I felt Grantham were running out of steam a bit.
And that continued into the Hallam Kicking Uphill Second Half. Goals on 75 & 78 set up a donging dinging last ten. And. Lo. Iren Wilson knocked in a header in the last minute to frankly WILD scenes.
Enjoyed that.
