Grumpy Blog this ‘un. Soz. I’m getting frustrated. By owt, by lots. Firstly - Sheffield. I’m a music fan. I’m 59. In 1977, I was 19. I had an era. I had a time. Tramlines is not really my time. I travelled through the city centre on Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon/Tue on the way home from Balls & Sup. The difference in the “buzz” between (say) Saturday & Tuesday was remarkable. And, I get that. Something like Tramlines brings people out. Many people are understandably Living For The Weekend. But, you know, “A City is for Life, not just a weekend in July”.
Secondly, combine that midweek apathy with the Craft Beer Safety Net. I went into BrewDog on Division Street. What is a fucking stronger word than Uninspiring? Yeah, that. How many Entry Level Beers can you put on one board - Thornbridge Lukas, Indie Pale, Kingpin Lager? I gave it a run & had Clockwork Tangerine - better described as - another identikit, pissed around with slightly differently than the last pissed around with pale.
We nipped across to The Devonshire. NO ONE else in. He’s basically turned the lights low in the hope no fucker will come in. Two keg badges took my fancy. One had that Wiper & True Elephant logo thing on it. Fair play, that’s their branding. There is sometimes a little paper label attached - but basically, you have to ask. “Hi mate, I’m eyeing that Wiper & True, what sort of beer is it?”
That’s a pricey one I’m afraid
OK, what type of beer is this one here
That’s also pricey
No worries, but what style of beer is it
They’re all sort of IPAey.
I just sighed & did the fuck offey out of the place thing….
Come On People. Call to arms. I’m drinking it. You sell it me.
Standout beer of the day was Abbeydale Voyager #10, Vic Secret, Enigma & Dr Rudi on keg in The Devonshire Cat at 5.6%. Not least of the attraction was that it’s in the After Work Promotion at three and half a pint. I ain’t worked since 2010 - so technically, I qualified for that After Work Promotion more than most. Banging at that, or any, price. Rich. Hop forward. Full of flavour. Right up there that one.
I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting at The Lane. Internazionale are a big, famous club. We aren’t big. But, I was sort of expecting more ex-pat & bandwagon jumping Inter fans than there were. But, still, great crowd. Applause all round to the club for getting it sorted.
