My 188th “ground” watching an SUFC XI. That's the new, FA logoed set of two all weather pitches up at Meadowhead. There's a set of entry stiles in a bright reception. A little snack bar. Nominally you can watch the game through the window. But, you have to look through so much fencing, it ain't an easy watch. Cans of Magners Cider & bottles of Budweiser in there for the Alcohol Delivery System Desperate.

The Game

Plastic pitch. So not particularly impacted by ice/frost. But, there was a light dusting of snow. Not easy out there. A bit of slipping & sliding. Taters for us fans an’ all. A lively & entertaining game in the circumstances. United started very well. Forced the Club keeper to make a number of full stretch saves. They should have capitalised really.

Club came more & more into it and took the lead. So, that was a fight back victory for the Futures. I think that'll put us just a point behind Handsworth with a game in hand. United were stronger & stronger as the game went on. But it was end to end at times.

The Drink

I was brought up at the bottom of Woodseats Rd. I lived a lot of my life on Woodseats. I once worked behind the bar in The Big Tree. (During The Snakebites FC era). But, if I've ever been in The Cross Scythes on Derbyshire Lane before, I can't remember. So, I'm calling that a first.

Part of the Thornbridge estate. I used to have a downer on Thornbridge pubs.  Partly, but not solely, related to the Emma Harrison issue. She was married to Thornbridge founder & Chairman, Jim Harrison. Mrs Harrison was embroiled in controversy surrounding her company Action For Employment, A4e. That company benefited from your & my tax pounds to run schemes for unemployed people. Mrs Harrison took an £8.6 million dividend payment from the company.

I worked in the public sector on youth & adult training from 1993 to 2010. And, I didn't take an £8.6 million dividend. To some, I'm a parasite.

They make great beer.  Blackboard says 5 Thornbridge on cask, 6 on keg. Very dog friendly. More dogs than beers. Jaipur & Sequoia went off before my eyes. Way it goes, but that didn't make me warm to them. Pints pulled up short & whacked in front of you. They could do better than that.

I had Hubble on cask at 5.2%. Lots of flavour. A very appealing yellow side of gold in the glass. Very thin floating head. Cracks appeared in that as you pick it up. Is there a name for that? Anyway not so appealing.

Earthy smell. Similar to cooked rice. The taste is quite neutral up front. It develops some tropical fruit, citrus. Before a pleasant but gentle bitter finish. Nice beer. But, maybe I'm looking for a bit more from a 5.2%.

Brother Rabbit on cask at 4%. See above re identikit colour. A bit bland that, first up. Rising bread, yeast smell. Which I found unappealing. Behind all that is an intriguing slightly orange taste. Which cheers everything up a bit. But, then gets sourer & sourer as you get down it. Which puts a dampener on everything.
