It is very difficult to get this David Brooks thing out of your head. Let’s deal with tonight. As soon as he came on, it livened up. He scored the winner. And, it’s difficult to overlook that goal. He’s run from deep, deep, deep in his own half. The ball is glued to his feet. Whhooaahh. The ball is glued to his foot - singular. He’s all left foot of course. And, when he’s got near enough, he’s basically rolled it in past the keeper. The cameras have captured it natch. And, before I went to bed, it was all over Sky Sports News. Don’t watch it. You’re only torturing yourselves.
No matter how many brain cells I chuck at it, I just keep coming back to - it’ll have to run it’s course. The “market” is what it is. Premier League clubs can afford to suck up young talent “just in case”. They can offer the players a way of making previously unheard of money. If someone wants him. If he thinks it’s worth going. You can either get your knickers in a twist. Or not.
My wildest demands are simply - I hope Wilder has told him where he stands. Because, if a Premier League club come knocking…..
Essentially, Brooks was a First Team squad player all last season. Loaned back to the U23s as he’s still got some development in him. Wilder needs to tell him he’s in his plans, it’s going to be a long old season, players will get knocks, players will get cards, form will dip, Brooks will get his chance. Wilder can’t guarantee him a routine first team shirt. But, he can (and should) guarantee him an opportunity. In the old world. The choice is between playing regularly in the Championship, in front of 30k, all over the tele, the crowd chanting your name. Or playing in some U23 side at Tranmere & Southport in front of hundreds. Alright, you’ll have a better boot deal. And, you’ll have a set of those big headphones & a neat man-bag. But, it ain’t the old world anymore. Hence, it’ll all have to unfold.
At least that Brooks goal settled an argument I was having with a mate. I have said before, I worry about giving Brooks a free role in mesters football. I’ve questioned whether he might benefit from the discipline of having a set role. But, that’s all gone now. It’s only pre season. It’s only Chesterfield. But, look what he’s gone and done.
I’m not clamouring to stick him in the starting XI v Brentford. I’m not clamouring to get him on a 5 year contract. I’m not clamouring to chuck money at his wages. I’m not clamouring to stick a price tag on him. I’m just going to shut my eyes. And plead. Let’s just see him a few times in the Championship by Christmas.
The interesting case in point is that he’s ALREADY been at Man City. And, he’s ALREADY been around a successful SUFC side. If he takes the info in. If he’s no mug. He’ll know what might happen if he’s playing in a United side holding it’s own in the Championship. He’ll know what the alternative is at a Premier League Academy. But, the bright lights and all that….
The Miners Arms, Hundall. Thirty pence off a pint for CAMRA Members. Hurrah. First time I've ever been in. Five on cask. I went….
Drone Valley Brewery, Dronny Bottom Bitter on Cask at 3.7%. Although I must declare a conflict of interest. I'm a Brewery Member & hence “own a slice”. Mrs Ball Sup owns an even bigger slice. We'll, it's a nice drop. Just the brown side of tan. Superb head, stays all the way down. Very well balanced & in fantastic condition. It's a very refreshing sessionable bitter. Full of flavour. With nothing over the top. Loved it.
