Whitt Moor Hand-to-Hand

Chesterfield 0 v Sheffield United 3
Friendly
Saturday 20 July 2024
SUFC 2024/25 Game #1

Because I hadn't been in the country for a bit, all my tickets for pre season had congregated at a friend's house. So, I had to do a hand-to-hand with him on Whitt Moor. They use The Red Lion, at the end there, by the roundabout. As a Beer Ponce, that wouldn't be my natural choice.

Two things you should know about the signs on the pub. If that R gets anymore wonky, we'll rename it The Something Lion. And, the Pub is available for new managers if anyone wants to take it on.

Pleasantly surprised. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Welcome to the new season.

The Red Lion
570 Sheffield Rd, Whittington Moor, Chesterfield S41 8LX

Three on Cask. All from Old Mill Brewery in Snaith. Hard plastic glasses though. Don't feel there was a need for that. Bar Person/Manager absolutely outstanding. Serving multiple people at the two bar fronts. And reassuring everyone else she'd seen them, and they would be next, or at least soon. Outstanding. Although I felt we suffered a bit from “first pulls” on the Cask Ales. But, as we ploughed on, we thoroughly enjoyed them. I'm singling out;

Old Mill Brewery, Styrian Wolf, Single Hopped Pale Ale on Cask at 4.2%

Nice n bitter all the way down. Coming off some orange/mango sweetness. A real grower. New Season. Let's get at it.

Fucking upholstery could do with some work, mind.

Unless you attach yourself to every (social) media outlet. And pretend you know who our transfer targets are. Modern, Championship Club pre seasons are tricky. A load of blokes you half remember, some blokes you'd fucking forgotten, multitudes of kids from the Academy, and some new names you haven't yet learned.

If you're very unlucky, the geezer behind you in the ground will speak with faux authority about the percentage passing phases of the new left back. Having “scouted” him previously.

And then, come the Window closing at the end of August, who fucking knows who'll still be around. What we do know is there'll be some expert, having seen (insert Academy Kids name), and pronounced his performance at Chesterfield “decent”, who'll be petitioning for him to go on loan to League One. While we get some Journeyman in.

Osula wide left in the Jarrod Bowen role was interesting. And paid off. Louie Marsh has not particularly shone when he's had a chance. Competent. But not shining. I'm a little disappointed in that. Sasnauskas did himself a whole heap of good. And it was great to see Owen Hampson getting his goal.

Good workout. I thought we did well. Long way to go.

The Ball Suppy's 2024

Sheffield United 0 v Tottenham Hotspur 3
Premier League
Sunday 19 May 2024
SUFC 2023/24 Game #71

The Ball Suppy's 2024

Ladies & Gentlemen. Welcome to the Carrier Bag Firm end-of-season review. The Ball Suppy’s 2024.

How else you gonna get yer kicks in the Premier League?

So. The Year In Beer. A Season With Saison. The Prem On The Piss. Here we go…

Pub In The Town 2024

Awarded to the best pubs and bars in the town where the game is actually being played.

🥉 Bronze

ORA Brewing Co.
Unit 16a, Rosebery Industrial Park, London N17 9SR
for Tottenham Hotspur, 16 September 2023, lost 2-1

Less than 20 mins on foot from the Away Turnstiles. Originally an Italian Microbrewery, they now brew in North London. A bit - DJ playing unnecessarily - noisy inside. Beer service was a bit slow, due to Civilians spending an age choosing, and then being dispensed, non beer products. Scores highly due to proximity to the ground and eight of their own on Keg.

🥈 Silver

Mean Eyed Cat
1 St Thomas' St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 4LE
for Newcastle United, 27 April 2024, lost 5-1

Great place. Quite close to the ground an’ all. Single room. But with a Beer Courtyard out the back. I counted five pukka craft Keg and five on Cask. Very efficient service at a busy time.

🥇 Gold

The Black Dog Beer House
17 Albany Rd, Brentford TW8 0NF
for Brentford, 13 April 2024, lost 2-0

Awarded Gold despite an odd exchange with the manager after he'd taken one of our beers off. Or maybe because of that (giggling here). The Black Dog is a superb place. I counted eleven pukka craft Keg and four on Cask. Convenient for the ground. Wins mainly on the great beer list, and the quality of the beers. Plus, it's just down the street from where I was detained for murder after the game in 1979!!!

The JC Door-To-Door Award for The Sensible Beer Bus Stop 2024

Awarded to the best pubs and bars in the unwitting towns and villages where the Sensible Beer Bus pulls up.

As seat reservations continue to fucking operate on the bus. And as I'm therefore forced to sit near the fucking back. Meaning I have to fucking fight my way past dozens of non-drinking Civilians to get to the pub in the first place. While the Ticket GangMaster lords it up the sharp end. And is often on his second fucking beer before I even get to the Pub. It's a miracle this category is being awarded this year…

🥉 Bronze

The Lower Angel
27 Buttermarket St, Warrington WA1 2LY
for Everton, 11 May 2024, lost 1-0

A lovely beer list made up by Liverpool Brewing Co. The pub has an authentic, rough n ready, proper pub feel. It was a bit of a Saturday Morning Mad House. But the manager and staff knew what they were doing.

One customer asked to speak to a female member of the Carrier Bag Firm.

“No. It's alright. You can stay there. I just wanted to tell you I've been Bra Shopping.”

(makes gesture of holding breasts up)
I don't think any of us expected it to unfold thus.

🥈 Silver

Northern Whisper Ramsbottom Tap Room
2 Market Pl, Ramsbottom, BL0 9HT
for Burnley, 2 December 2023, lost 5-0

Trust me. Northern Whisper are a great under the radar brewery. They've got great traditional Cask. They've got consistent straight ahead Keg. And they're not afraid to piss around at the edges. In their Ramsbottom Tap, there were four of their own on Cask. And eight on Keg.

🥇 Gold

Leviathan Brewing
Unit 4&5, 17 Reddicap Trading Estate, Sutton Coldfield B75 7BU
for Aston Villa, 22 December 2023, drew 1-1

Would also win anyone's award for the Most Unlikely Looking Bar In England. We knew it was there. We even saw their name on the list of units as we turned off the street. But, lights - there were none. Nameplates - there were none. Fuck Sake, it's easier to find out the name and details of the Shutter Company than the Brewery. But, anyway, they've used the universal (narrator - isn't universal, Phil) method of a cardboard sign propped up on a Keg. It was mobbed inside.

Eleven on Keg. Magnificent range of guests. Four of their own. Cask lines empty. “Amusing can fridge”. I did a quick beers v minutes calculation. Fuck it - I'm going through all the Leviathans.

Beer In The Ground 2024

This is awarded for beers served in the ground that the Carrier Bag Firm might plausibly select in a Pub. (Say, if there's nothing else on offer). Look. You ain't gonna get beers from smaller independent breweries in grounds anymore. But, this award is the antidote to John Smith’s & Heineken, and the other industrial lagers.

🥉 Bronze

Meantime Brewing Co, Anytime IPA on Keg at 4.7%
at Brentford, 13 April 2024, lost 2-0

🥈 Silver

Brixton Brewery, Reliance Pale Ale on Keg at 4.2%
at Luton Town, 10 February 2024, won 3-1

Reliance is a great footie beer. Sharp and zingy. Enough bitter in the finish to keep you interested.

🥇 Gold

SALT (Saltaire), Loom, Pale Ale on Keg at 4%
at Chesterfield, pre season friendly, 15 July 2023, won 2-0

Feel a little bit of a fraud including that. Coming, as it did, at a (then) non league game in pre season. But. Loom is simply the best footie beer out there. And we had it. So it's won. Luscious and inviting. Flavours nicely separated. Bursting out of it.

This is a good opportunity to remind ball suppers that Beavertown, Neck Oil is available in some stands at Beautiful Down Town Bramall Lane. No longer independent of course, But, a welcome addition to the other shit available.

(Caption: pictured v Everton, 2 September 2023, drew 2-2)

I’d love to hear from fellow fans about their Pub & Beer experiences this season. Comment, Feedback & Interact if you fancy.

She's Been Bra Shopping

Everton 1 v Sheffield United 0
Premier League
Saturday 11 May 2024
SUFC 2023/24 Game #70

Visiting some Pubs on football AwayDays can be great because there's a large range of superb tasting beers. And some Pubs can be great because of the absolutely mad shit which has gone on.

The Lower Angel
27 Buttermarket St, Warrington WA1 2LY

Had a lot of both. Our timings were a little off. For reasons unknown, the GangMaster prints out a list of away fixtures in time for the first game of the season. Details include date, departure time and cost. Of course, loads of games are switched for a variety of reasons. So the list is redundant before the ink is fucking dry.

The original list had Everton away on Saturday 11 May (that survived), departing at 10am (that didn't). At some point, the GangMaster has had a relapse, checked his pub opening time alignment with his departure time directive calibrated against his mileage chart.

Firstly, he's considered an Act of Parliament to change the pub licensing hours.

Secondly, he's considered another Act of Parliament to increase the speed limit to 100mph so he can get the coach to the pub earlier.

Thirdly, he's considered moving Warrington closer to Sheffield, or vice versa.

He's absolutely gobsmacked when the World won't bend to his will on those options. So, he's said - fuck it, we'll set off at nine.

Thing is. Once he's made that decision. He turned from his GangMaster persona to his MotherHen guise. Constantly reminding everyone it's Nine, not Ten. Not Ten as set in stone on the original first match of the season list. The list that everyone throws away as soon as the first fixture changes.

You can check my phone. Two reminders a day for two weeks that it's nine, not ten.

He's also rode roughshod over the initially announced £25 fare. Declaring it a FREE TRIP. So, that'll work.

What happens? We get to Warrington before opening time. The Carrier Bag Firm fragments. A small few find ourselves wandering into The Lower Angel, as it appears to be open before time.

I chat the Manager up, as you do. A lady comes in. Nice and friendly. Calls me La’. I call her Love. She's in her twenties (guess). Stone cold sober as best I can tell. Not a black eye. But she's had one recently. Orders a Madri. Gets a load of coins out. And passes them to the Manager one at a time.

“I'm gonna need more. I'm gonna need more than that. More…”

In only a few minutes, another female member of staff arrives. To relieve the Manager who clearly has to nip out for a bit.

It's a distinct two room pub. But, the Madri lady is a bit of a walkabout livewire. And she's in a different room to the new BarPerson. As they are reunited, briefly…

“Oh fucking hell. Not you. I can't be doing with you this morning. I thought we weren't serving you no more.”

Let us say - the assumption is they have previous. But, as a Madri has already been purchased. We're all good for now. Except.

The Madri lady makes a bee line for the CBF table. She addresses one of us directly.

“Excuse me. I need to speak to a woman.”

Appropriate Bagger attempts to detach herself for the supposed Womanno a Womanno.

“No. It's alright. You can stay there. I just wanted to tell you I've been Bra Shopping.”

(makes gesture of holding breasts up)

I don't think anyone expected it to unfold thus.

The new BarPerson was bang at it brilliant. As more and more CBF arrive. Including MotherHen himself. The BarPerson has got it all on. But, she's serving many at the same time (not Madri lady obvs). Pulling pints in both rooms. Letting ‘em settle. Forgetting nobody. Forgetting nothing. I feel she deserves some appreciation.

“Can I buy you one?”

“Thank you.”

Pulls double vodka. (Incidentally she clearly doesn't charge me full for that). Downs in one. High Fives me (I'm 65). And says;

“I haven't really been to bed since Wednesday morning…”

Absolute Mad House.

It's effectively a Liverpool Brewery pub. A magnificent nine on Cask. Aaahhh, matching the new coach departure time, I hear you say…

Liverpool Brewing Co. Hop Burst, Pale Ale on Cask at 4.1%

Great beer. Falconers 7Cs, Mosaic, Azacca. Soft mouthfeel. Some grapefruit. Great flavours.

Liverpool Brewing Co. Cascade, Pale Ale on Cask at 3.8%

Absolute belter. There's a good deal of gentle bitter up the back end. And some sugar first up. Lovely balance.

Liverpool Brewing Co. Kitty Wilkinson, Milk Stout on Cask at 5%

Named for Catherine Wilkinson, the Saint of The Slums. During an 1832 cholera outbreak, Kitty had the only boiler in her neighbourhood. She invited anyone to wash their (potentially infected) clothes and linen, saving many lives. As a campaigner, activist and fundraiser, she was later responsible for the opening of the first combined washhouse and public baths in the UK.

We toasted her, enthusiastically, with that stout. Congratulations - you have just been informed by the Carrier Bag Firm.

Incidentally, as I bought that one, having already established my friendly credentials with the vodka swilling BarPerson, she said;

“Watch the bar for me La’. If anyone comes in, tell ‘em I've gone for a wee…”

Lovely Mad House.

Very disappointing performance. Never really out of it at one nil. But certainly never really in it either.

The Blog Falls Back On Beer

Sheffield United 1 v Nottingham Forest 3
Premier League
Saturday 4 May 2024
SUFC 2023/24 Game #66

I've got nowt. What's a Blogging Brother supposed to do? Will The Prince n Wilder not think of the Content Providers?

We had a spell. We often do. We conceded. We always do. Sort of sloppy. But mainly not tight enough. No intensity. We tired. We always do. We went to the usual - what the fucks he bringing him on for - subs. Because we've nobody else. And we capitulated. We often do.

I'm not capable of saying who stays, who goes next season. I don't retain all the shit about which contract is up, who we've got an option on, who is on hold out. Maybe if I did, I'd have some Content to Provide.

Of course, my USP is the beer. So, you'd best have that.

Industry Tap
85 Sidney St, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield S1 4RG

The Outstanding Beer Of The Day wasn't even on!!!

Twisted Wheel Brew Co. No Mikey, No, Milk Stout on Keg at 5%

That one kicked out as he was pulling my order. So, I reselected. The Guv’norrrr (correctly) gave me what he had managed to pour. I eternally owe him a debt of honour. For, it was glorious. Rich and indulgent. Sweetness just right.

Abbeydale Brewery, Salvation - Irish Stout on Keg at 4.5%

The Reselect. Problem is. Pales into insignificance behind that kicked ‘un. Sessionable. But that's code for thin mouthfeel, straightahead, flavours flavour, but go nowhere.

Sommar Brewing Co (West Midlands), Brown Eyes, Stout on Keg at a whopping 7%

See above. No. No. No. Not the fucking bit above about No Mikey, No. The bit above about Salvation. Having Stouted in, we thought we'd keep searching. Slightly disappointed with this one truth be told. Bit of promise. No delivery.

(R)

Newcastle United 5 v Sheffield United 1
Premier League
Saturday 27 April 2024
SUFC 2023/24 Game #65

I am now going to preach about The Football Governance Bill. Colloquially known as “The Regulator”. I usually find it best if you preach in bite size chunks. Football is so broken that some fans can't believe it can be fixed. Fair do. But, in bite sized chunks, you might be able to fix bits of it. That's what's down for us.

Take Newcastle. We see what's happened there. A country has bought them. A rich country at that. Saudi Arabia. Now in any fucking world that is not allowed. And would not get through a Fit and Proper Test. Not because it's Saudi Arabia. But because a country can't own a football club.

So. They have to dress it up.

“It's not a Country lads, it's this group of Blokes over here. They're the owners.”

“The money? The money you ask. It's money set aside to invest in good things.”

“No. No. No. It's not reeeaaallly Saudi Government money. Not really.”

“It's these Blokes and (checks notes) this woman over here, they're the owners, they make decisions with the money, they're independent.”

So. Unbelievably. They are deemed Fit and Proper. Then it all goes to shit. Some Saudi Royal can't help himself.

“WE expect OUR club to compete regularly in Europe.”

“WE are proud that OUR ground will host the Saudi Arabia national team.”

“WE are delighted to announce WE'VE also bought Golf to go alongside OUR purchase of football.”

The Pyro has cleared. We can now see who's on the Frontline of their Firm. It was the fucking Saudi Government all along. Who knew?

But, it's all too late now. Owners gonna own. Slaps on the wrist maybes. Tellings offs. But, they've taken the mask off. Watcha gonna do?

But, in this bite size chunk. Of Stottie Cake and Pease Pudding. The Regulator kicks in. Because there's an ongoing process. There's re-validation. It's not get through the initial test and take the Royal piss. Clubs should only get a License if they can prove the identity of their ultimate owner. And. They should/will have to keep proving that. It applies to EXISTING owners as well as PROSPECTIVE owners.

We can't row back completely. We can't cancel the Newcastle deal. They'll still have the money (ish). But, The Regulator can (hopefully) rein in the worst of the Sportswashing aspects.

“Mate, if that Prince keeps saying it's his Club, and it's Government money, and you keep saying - no it's not - you're fucked.”

Mean-Eyed Cat
1 St Thomas' St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 4LE

Great place. Quite close to the ground an’ all. Single room. But with a Beer Courtyard out the back. I counted five pukka craft Keg and five on Cask. Very efficient service at this busy time.

Two By Two Brewing (Wallsend), El Santo, Hazy IPA in Keg at 4%

Great beer. Best I've had in a while. Lovely bitter orange up top. Softens out a bit with some peach. Only for that bitter to have a second run down the channel.

I mean that's how it goes. Sheffield United are on fire. Chance after chance. Wave after wave of attacks. Deservedly going in the lead. Could have been more. Should have been more.

“Fine Phil, how did the other 71 minutes go?”

Because that's it. We've only got a spell in us. I will allow myself to say.

“Going ahead in Premier League away games, no matter the ultimate result, is a Vibe.”

“Phil, I notice you haven't mentioned the word - relegated.”

“No I fucking haven't. There's all the points deductions for other clubs still to come Bro.”

I Can't Find My Baby

Manchester United 4 v Sheffield United 2
Premier League
Wednesday 24 April 2024
SUFC 2023/24 Game #63

NFDR
No Football Don't Read

The MotherHen made a miscalculation tonight. He called the drink for Rochdale. Well actually he called it for;

“Mike Harding was a cowboy here.”

“Two famous female singers come from here.”

“And two notorious MPs have been elected to represent here.”

It's how he gets his kicks. Usually, the set up is simple. Find a town. One drop off. Outside the Wetherspoons. One pick up. Same place. I should emphasise that I don't partake in the ‘spoons. But, there is a loyal clientele who flock there.

Very occasionally, MotherHen makes a judgement call that there is a particular pub, of some interest, a bit too far from the ‘spoons. And he makes two drop offs. But always one pick up. So, today, you could get off at The Baum in Rochdale, I didn't, he didn't, some did. And;

“Don't forget, pick up outside Wetherspoons.”

Except. The fucking bus couldn't park outside Wetherspoons in Rochdale. Because the bit outside Wetherspoons in Rochdale was fucking pedestrianised!!!

So, MotherHen had to spend his afts MotherHenning to catch up with all his chicks who got off at The Baum. Worrying that they would head for Wetherspoons and find - No Coach. We don't deserve him.

I caught up with him in;

Our Gracie's
13 The Butts, Rochdale OL16 1ES

A Gracie Fields themed MicroPub. Yep. I meant to write that. Re earlier quiz - the other was Lisa Stansfield. There were four straightahead Cask on.

Whitworth Valley Brewing (Rochdale), Drop It Like It's Hop, West Coast Pale on Cask at 4.5%

I rather think it's a bit diff to get a true West Coast into a Cask. This one was in great condition. The bitterness did grow towards the finish. But it was a bit too woody and nutty for my taste. Although the bitterness did rescue it.

Wilder made the statement choices. Arblaster as Captain. Dre starting. Curtis & Hampson on the bench. Wes restored. Incidentally, once we realised Blaster was armbanding, I messaged the Carrier Bag Firm StatsMaster for deets on Arblaster Captaining the U18s and U21s. To be told…

“We don't have the facilities for that.”

Fucking unbelievable.

Wes was superb. And United scored the same number of goals as the number of notorious Rochdale MPs (Cyril Smith & George Galloway). And the number of drop offs the coach made….

Is It Off Because It's Off?

Brentford 2 v Sheffield United 0
Premier League
Saturday 13 April 2024
SUFC 2023/24 Game #59
Ground Tick #486
Different Ground watching a Sheffield United XI #234
English Ground Tick #300

There was plausible beer in the ground. As you'll recall, the Carrier Bag Firm Charter requires us to buy, drink and tick those. Even if you've already had a bellyful in the local Real Ale Pubs & Craft Beer Bars.

Meantime Brewing Co, Anytime IPA on Keg at 4.7%

And. Fuck me. I needed that one as “they” all descended on me on the Brentford concourse.

In case you ain't heard, this was the first time The Blades had played at Brentford's new build ground. I think it's fair to say that a number of people had made the effort to come and see their team. And to tick this ground off. I know I had.

First, there were The Polite Enquirers.

“Phil, how many grounds is this you've seen a United team play on?”

(Narrator takes big slurp of Meantime IPA)

“What? Any team? Friendlies? The lot? Even The Futures? … 234.”

The Polite Enquirer had done 238. Fair fucking play.

Second, there were The Assertive Quizzers.

“Counting this one, how many of the current 92 have United never played on?”

“Fuck knows. Er. Well. Counting this one, they've now played at every ground in the Premier League and The Championship. And I've done all those.”

“Correct. But what about the others.”

“Well. They've played at every ground in League One. And I've done all those.”

“No. They've never played at Cheltenham Town.”

“Yes they have. 19 July 2003. I went.”

“That was a friendly. You can't count those…”

(Narrator takes VERY big slurp of Meantime IPA.)

“Well. In League Two, it'd be Wimbledon, Harrogate, Sutton United but I've been to all those as a Neutral. Then Forest Green Rovers, Newport County and Salford City.”

“Yes. Those. And Barrow and Accrington.”

(Narrator, needing courage for this next bit, downs rest of Meantime IPA in one.)

“United sent an Under 23 side to Barrow in 2019. We got beat 3-1.”

“United sent a side to Accrington in 2001. The Reserves played Rochdale Reserves there.”

“You can't count those…”

I mentioned the Carrier Bag Firm Charter earlier. Well, the Charter is helpful here as well.

“Everybody. It's your Tick list. They're your Ticks. There's no Rules. Only your Rules. Tick yer Ticks. Celebrate yer Ticks. And celebrate how others are Ticking.”

I have seen football played on 486 grounds. By chance that includes exactly 300 grounds in England. On 234 of those grounds, I have seen a Sheffield United XI play. I have seen Sheffield United XIs play on 84 of the current 92. But, adding in Neutral games, I have seen games at 87 of the current 92.

Thank Fuck that debates over for a bit…

Brentford scored their second on 90 +3. Their opening goal on 63 was a big deflection OG. United not only stayed in that game for long periods. They were IN that game for long periods. Nothing mad. No particular claims of should have won. Maybe - could have drawn.

We had half n half possession. We had more than a handful of pukka shots. We had some intent. We couldn't really get much going up top. Brereton-Díaz and McB not gelling quite as well as recent games.

Arblaster enhanced his rep. If/when he gets the chance, he needs to go - mid-expansive. He (understandably) plays a fair few safe, help it on balls. He occasionally looks for the Hollywood cross fielder out wide. A key strength is the 15 yard progression - 12 sometimes. Either playing between the lines. Or a quick burst between the lines. Those will come (I hope). Because meaningful possession and progression is where he can make a difference.

Injuries mean we are still juggling at the back. But, Yasser Juggledin Larouci did well I thought. More minutes mean more settled in. I thought he did the job Wilder probably told him to do.

The McAtee thing is getting to me a bit. He's fucking lazy. Alright, alright he looks fucking lazy. He's marking time (because FFS he's not marking his man) when he could be using this opportunity to march forward.

But, anyway, you don't get any fucking points for any of that shit.

We had an interesting Quality Control issue in our bar of choice;

The Black Dog Beer House
17 Albany Rd, Brentford TW8 0NF

You know the Black Dog right? Just along from St Paul's Rec? Where I was detained after the game in 1979 in connection with a Murder!!!

By exploration, we knew the Beer Board in the BDBH by heart. Intimately. So, when we went in after the game, we knew that this one must be fresh on.

True Story Brewing Co (Wiltshire), Gone Postal, Hazy IPA on Keg at 5.8%

Quick sip. Nice. But, more or less immediately, the Bar Manager has rubbed it off the board. And turned the pump clip around. It's Off. But, is it Off because it's Off, or is it just Off?

I'd be interested in what you, reader, would do in those circumstances. You've bought a round of a particular beer. It tastes good to you. It's clearly not run out. But, the Manager then takes it off.

I went to enquire…

“Some customers have a problem with it, it's busy, so I'm taking it off.”

“Fine, but what do you want me to do with the three I've just bought?”

“Drink them if you want. I can't be replacing and refunding beers left right and centre.”

“But, if there's something wrong with it…”

“Have you tasted it? Do you think there's something wrong with it?”

“But, you're taking it off. Do you think there's something wrong with it?”

“Sometimes, during sparging, a bit of an antiseptic flavour can develop from the husks. It's a brewing issue. It's actually detectable in a lot of beers. I don't think there's anything seriously wrong with the beer. It's certainly not off. But, I can just detect it when I taste it. I'm going to have a good look at it, and a good taste of it, when I open in the morning. But, to save a lot of hassle while we're busy. I'm taking it off for now.”

That's unusual. The Manager, giving a full and robust explanation of what's occurring. Almost as if he knows what he's doing!!!

I'm proud to say the Carrier Bag Firm routinely have very little idea of what's occurring. So, we did as he said. We drank and thoroughly enjoyed that beer.

The Black Dog is a superb place. I counted eleven pukka craft Keg and four on Cask. In the unlikely event you've thoroughly enjoyed reading about Biggest Ticker, Lazy Midfielders, Beer In The Ground, and Unusual Quality Control Discussions, then please feel free to stop reading right here.

But, feels like we ain't had a Beer Blog for ages. So, for the unintentionally interested, I'm now going to run through the lot.

Round Corner Brewing (Melton Mowbray), Drovers, IPA on Keg at 4.3%

Fresh & Zingy. Tang to the bitterness. Rather than a throat grabber. Long finish. Dry Hopped with Citra, Mosaic & Simcoe.

Boundary Brewing (Belfast), Imagine Not Liking The Corners, Porter on Keg at 4.1%

Oatmeal porter. Some toast. Hint of chocolate.

Polly's Brew Co (Flintshire), Yonkers, Hazy Pale on Keg at 5.6%

Superb. It sounds odd. But in a certain light, it was so dense & opaque, it looked almost grey. Which I found very inviting. Tropical fruit backed up by marmalade orange.

Lost and Grounded Brewers (Bristol), Collab with Burnt Mill Brewery (Ipswich), Big Thaw 5, West Coast IPA on Keg at 6.8%

Westie Bestie. Two of my favourite English breweries Collabing. This was the one that replaced the - I've taken it off Gone Postal. Absolute Belter. Pils, Pale Ale and Cara malts. Columbus, Chinook and HBC 586 Hops. Citrus, pine, rich bitterness.

The Kernel Brewery (London), Small Pale Ale Citra Centennial Columbus Chinook Simcoe on Keg at 4.2%

Surprisingly ordinary. Couldn't help thinking they've gone in with a few hops too many and it's all lost in translation.

The Verdict Of Dark Fruits Frankie

Sheffield United 2 v Chelsea 2
Premier League
Sunday 7 April 2024
SUFC 2023/24 Game #57

Good news. This week, we had a Beer Adventure. We did have loads of other stuff planned. Chelsea mates were staying with us. Hallam were at home on the Saturday. Waterlogged. Again.

But, at about the same time Sandygate was failing that inspection, word began to filter down to Carrier Bag Firm Towers.

“It's on. It's come on yesterday. They're serving it.”

I'll explain what IT was and WHO was serving it in a bit. But first, let's meander.

Starting with Gwenda’s Garage. Roz Ellen & Annette Williams had passed motor vehicle mechanics training in the 1980s. Ros Wall was already what we might call a self taught mechanic. The three of them struggled at times to get jobs in what was a male dominated industry. The 1980s were also heady times for activism. Lovers of bikes and cars, part of feminist culture, and with lots of energy, the three women decided to strike out on their own.

Grants (remember them?). Rent deals with Sheffield Council (remember them?). Help from female electricians and plumbers, subsequently repaid in kind with car repairs & maintenance. And, Roz, Annette & Ros were able to open their own garage in Neepsend.

In earlier times, Gwenda Stewart had medals and was mentioned in dispatches for driving ambulances through dangerous territory in WW1. In the 1920s, Gwenda was breaking 1,000 mile and 12 hour records. In the 1930s, Gwenda broke the one mile speed record a number of times. She competed twice in the Le Mans 24 hour race.

In her honour, Gwenda's Garage seemed a suitable name for Roz, Annette & Ros’s new venture. Trust me. There is much more to the story or these three women & Gwenda. But, let's just summarise. Three women, setting up a repair garage in Neepsend, and naming it after a famous & record breaking female driver.

Fast forward to another industry “historically” dominated by Men. Brewing.

In 2013, Sophie de Ronde, Head Brewer at Burnt Mill Brewery (Suffolk), had the idea for International Women's Collaboration Brew Day (IWCBD). The basics would be that women brewers and others (that “and others” is going to be crucial in this Blog) would get together on or around International Women's Day (8 March) to collaborate on a beer brew.

So. It came to pass that, this year, one of the Carrier Bag Firm, an and others, participated in an IWCBD brew at Heist Brew Co, Neepsend, Sheffield. You'll remember Neepsend. Original home of Gwenda's Garage.

Now. I'm a bloke. I wasn't at the International Women's Collaboration Brew Day. So, I can't give you the deets of the day. But, when we were told;

“It's on. It's come on yesterday. They're serving it.”

With IT being the appropriately named Heist Brew Co, Gwenda's Garage, Hazy IPA at 4%.

What I could do was organise a lovely loose grouping of “the collaborator”, Blades, Chelsea fans, Cider drinkers, Lager drinkers, Abbeydale Heathen drinkers and assorted Carrier Bag Firmers to head over to the Heist Taproom. Frankly, to try and drink the Keg(s) of Gwenda's Garage DRY.

The CBF brew the beer. The CBF drink the beer.

The beer is a juicy session New England IPA. Brewed with 2023 Yakima Chief x Pink Boots Hop Blend. Idaho 7, Ahtanum, El Dorado, & HBC 638. I mean oooofffftttt.

One of the Chelsea Cider drinkers pronounced it - pineapple juice.

Not wrong Dark Fruits Frankie. I mean. Don't trust what I say about this beer. I'm biased on this one. But, lovely and soft and pillowy. Tropics, citrus, some hay. Lovely.

Enjoyable game. It's difficult. My impressions included Chelsea were poor. Backed up by the (maybe) jaundiced views of my Chelsea mates. The slightly less shit scared than usual United side were able to show there's a football team in there somewhere.

Small Wins Fan

Liverpool 3 v Sheffield United 1
Premier League
Thursday 4 April 2024
SUFC 2023/24 Game #56

Apologies. Games coming thick & fast. Blogs not so. The age old dilemma whether to go or write about one you've gone.

And, I'm going to say, not as good as I remember it.

The Bard MicroPub
57 High St, Prescot L34 6HF

But, pushes the buttons. Opened a bit earlier for us. Following the GangMaster making them an offer they couldn't refuse. There's still that odd thing going on. Where after serving you, the BarPerson has to disappear ‘round the corner. In order to gather all the modern accoutrements for you to pay.

Maybe they'd had a recent Tap Takeover. Because there was surfeit of MBH (brewery in Knutsford) beer on the bar. Including those, there were four on Cask and two on Keg.

MBH Beer, Cheshire Pale, on Cask at 3.9%

Standard. Easy drinking. Lot to like identikit pale.

MBH Beer, Bunji, NZ Pale Ale on Cask at 3.8%

Standard. Pleasant and drinkable. But, I wouldn't have guessed that was Hopped NZ style.

MBH Beer, 1924, English Bitter on Cask at 4%

The best of the Cask on offer I felt. A proper modern English bitter. Nutty malt backbone which doesn't overpower. And leaves room for some hop action.

MBH Beer, UnChained, Hazy IPA on Keg at 4.4%

That was the best of the lot. Nice and pillowy. Although I felt it needed more bitterness.

Anfield. I'm going to say, not as good as I remember it.

Different fans are going to judge progress in different ways. Me? I've become a Small Wins Fan. For great swathes of this season, I don't even think there's been small wins. But, here we go. Good, very good, chances in the opening minutes. And, pegging them back to one one on 58. And holding that for 20.

Incidentally, gotta be converting those chances. Always.

Although it's gone down as an OG, that was a great win the ball back and be expansive goal. Small wins. All we got.

Incidentally, I damaged my voice during the pre-game. It was still not right by the Chelsea game. It all happened during You'll Never Walk Alone. My vocal chord damaging call-back repertoire was;

“Boooooo”
“Get fucked”
“Grow up”

(I'm not even sure what that last one was supposed to mean….)

I remain sixty five years old!!!!
