437 Australian Beer Ticks
After an early & disappointing finish to the Test. We were able to hit NOLA in Adelaide. New Orleans inspired (they tell me). Couldn't see it myself. Twelve pukka AUS craft kegs on. So, that's all good then. Don't mind if the bar is inspired by Rotherham if they've got 12 on. My first reaction was disappointment at the lack of South Australian stuff. But, I was just being awkward. A Lobethal Pilsener. That superb Pirate Life Mosaic IPA (I'd ticked earlier on the trip). And, a Beetroot Saison out of Western Ridge. No. Thanks. On that Beetroot one….
Anyway, I went Victorian.
Stomping Ground Brewing Co, Gipps St Pale Ale on keg at 5.4%.
Wolf Of The Willows, Johnny Smoke Porter on keg at 5.2%
Nice Porter. Bitterness kicked in well. Off the back of some blackcurrant. Smoke hints in the background.
We were also able to tidy up the Pirate Life tins we'd sourced the day we arrived in SA
Pirate Life Brewing, Golden Era Records from a tin at 4.7%.
Marmalade & other orange loveliness. Develops a tangy, bitter finish. Delicious.
Leading on to the 100th different Australian Beer of my 2017/18 Ashes trip.
Pirate Life Brewing x Ballast Point, Strong Pale Ale from a tin at 6%
On Transit Day, we headed out to Prancing Pony Brewing at Tottness out in the Adelaide Hills. (An hour on the Bus, $3.50 if you catch an Off Peak Fare - for your afternoon drinking pleasure). The location is slightly odd. After passing through the Tourist Twee Ghetto which is Hahndorf. P Pony is more of an industrial estate. Behind some Car Dealerships. Big, bright place though. With the brewing kit in the hanger with you.
Initially, we had one of those two nations divided by the same language moments.
Am I allowed to ask for a little taste?
Depends how many you want to taste?
Fuck cultural differences. That's the wrong answer.
“Of course” - that's the right answer.
I minced her the old “I'll buy one of these then, and if I don't like it, you can throw it away, and I'll keep buying & throwing until I find one I like”
But, after some perseverance, we remained friends. A great, great, great TWELVE of their own on keg.
Prancing Pony, Pagan's Empire Imperial Pale Ale at 6.6%.
Thick n chewy. A lot of toffee malt up front. Goes quickly into rich bitterness. A serious beer.
Prancing Pony, Sledgehammer Imperial Pilsener at 7.5%.
Oh yes. A seven & half Pilsener. I really enjoyed that one. Mandarin oranges running through it. Nice abv burn. Loved it.
Prancing Pony, Hopwork Orange at 4.8%.
Billed as American Pale. They've got a great range here. That one is fine. But, comes up a bit samey, identikit against it's compadres.
I've watched floodlit day/night first class cricket in Abu Dhabi, Leeds. And now Adelaide. Mainly. It doesn't matter what I think. About owt. Because. Floodlit Test Matches are here to stay in Adelaide.
