A disappointing result, from a very scrappy game. That leaves our U23s P5, W1. Tenth in the table, out of eleven. On balance, Millwall had the better chances. And probably deserved that. But, the winner didn't come until the 81st minute. And, I thought we might hang on. The Young Blades set up with a back three. Nickseon Gomis, Ashton Hall & Keenan Ferguson. I can't recall seeing Hall in that middle of a three role before. But, I thought he was excellent. Organised and very comfortable on the ball. I don't know whether it's the Andrew Hughes effect, or whether they have an issue with Jordan Amissah's kicking. But, United were using the new rule to take very short goal kicks. As in, Ashton is basically stood next to Jordan on the edge of the six yard box when he gives it to him. Ashton was very comfortable just turning & distributing it into midfield quickly & accurately.

I noticed Hughes doing a "wide centre back" drill with Hall, Gomis & Ferguson in the warm up. Passing the ball between them, but using the length (not width) of the pitch to push them further apart with each pass. During the game, Hughes was very encouraging of Gomis (in particular) getting wide & playing the ball.

I've seen Iliman Ndiaye in a number of little cameo appearances. But, today has been the first chance/time I've concentrated on him properly. He has a background growing up, and learning to play the game, in France & Senegal. Before moving to live in London, apparently without being able to speak a word of English. He did "Soccer Camps" and trials at a number of clubs. But, eventually ended up playing for Boreham Wood FC. He signed into the Shirecliffe Academy, after scouting & trials, in late August.

He's a bit on the slight & light side, but he's got a natural athleticism about him. Thin legs, with that slightly bow legged thing going on. The best way I can describe his performance is as follows. He's like that kid who has always been the best, most skillful ball player in every team he's ever played in. In the past he's made it look easy, probably because it was for him. But now, booooom, you fire him into a whole different ball game. And, he's trying, but struggling at times, to see how this game works. That's not to be critical. Suddenly, the ball drops right, he's got a yard of space "by chance". His hips don't lie. He's facing goal. He's off. Ball close his feet. Midfielders & defenders hanging off, or on their arse.

But, at other times, he's shape defending. Trying to stand in the right position as his man has the ball. But, not worrying him, not challenging him. I feel he'd benefit from being given a very definite role in games like today. He started like he was a completely rolling rover. Running around a lot. Popping up all over the park. But, ineffective. Great run kid. But, it's now not happening where you are. Too drifty. OK. He's learning. But, in the opening 15, compare him to (say) Reece York. Reece seemed to be involved in every play, attacking or defending. Iliman was very reactive in those early stages. The ball would come into his bit, you'd see the Millwall bloke with it, or go for it, and the first thing you'd notice is Iliman stationary. Wait. Then he moves. He'll need to be more alive, anticipatory & switched on.

Props to Iliman though. From about 15 onwards he started to get more involved - albeit in patches. Some good link play with Stephen Mallon playing left wingback. Iliman started to move towards his mates with the ball, looking for it, and was better for that. On 25, he got his first, facing the goal, ball at his feet, wriggling run going on - and got a half decent shot off.

In the second half, Iliman was involved in United's best spell (it was only short mind…). He was fully involved in the build up and recycling. Before York got a great long range shot off. Which rattled the post/bar - I don't know, I'm not a carpenter. Almost immediately, Iliman got on another one of those snaking runs, leaving defenders for dead. Only a great fingertip save by the 'wall 'keeper kept it out.

It is my understanding that Iliman Ndiaye & today's on the bench trialist, Ta'shee Andall-Gibbons, both came through/to the attention of SUFC Southern Scouting Network via Rising Ballers. Look Pal, it's modern. You're reading this on the Internet. It's a so called Blog. It may have come to your attention "via Twitter" or an "Internet Forum". Don't pretend you don't understand the power of Social Media. Because (I'm speaking about them, not for them) part of Rising Ballers approach seems to be - to put young players out there, the YouTube, the Instagram, the etcetera. They do have playing XIs. They do have their own Academy structure. But, they were not formed in 1893. They have not always played in green & cerise. They are not what you & I would call a football club. Rising Ballers do their shit. Sheffield United know about it. Iliman & Ta'shee get a chance to run around The Den. All good…..

Andall-Gibbons came on at 66 minutes. Replacing the other trialist, Florent Hoti. Like for like into midfield. Fair enough, he did look a lot on the small side. He's only got 24 minutes in the deep end. To learn a bit, and impress. Difficult. He had trouble finding space to make owt happen. And horrendously misplaced his first pass. Right at the death, he made a good last ditch tackle & did some good tracking back.

The Young Blades stayed in the game, and had their chances. But, we did look a bit iffy at the back at times. Particularly from balls whipped in and corners. Millwall had a great chance on 24 minutes. A high swinging corner left two unmarked at the back post. If anything, they got in each other's way and couldn't get a clean header off. The Millwall winner came in the 81st minute. Another deep corner. A good header down at the back stick. And it was knocked home.

Let's have it right. That has fallen quite well for a drink. A Friday. An afternoon kick off. You've got a good crack at the 3pm openings on the Bermondsey Beer Mile. And you can sit tight for the 5pms. We attacked two places we'd never been in before.

Bianca Road Brew Co, 83 Enid Street. I've been in their "old premises". (Millwall away last year). This new gaff is a double arch set up. The brew kit & the bar & some seats in one arch. The latrines, more seats & storage in t'other.

Seven Sisters Brewery & Bianca Road Brew Co, Bone Dry Brut IPA on keg at 6.8%. OK. I get it. But, it weren't Bone Dry. Indeed, you could barely notice it'd been Brut'ed out at all. That isn't my favourite style. So, when I have one, I like to KNOW I've had one. Perfectly pleasant. But, not far enough between two wrong stools.

Cloudwater, London Tap Room, 73 Enid Street - The Bermo Juice Bar. A very nice & modern set up. Sort of "sit on a shelf" seating down one side. With, "everything at the wrong angle" tables and stools. Maybe fifteen of their own on keg. Plus a rough handful of guests. Great, long beer range that.

Cloudwater, Nice IRL, Double IPA on keg at 8.5%.
I was disappointed in that. Thick and chewy. But, not a great deal happening. The thick sugar gets there in the end. But, it all felt a bit ordinary.

Cloudwater, Relevant To Our Interests, Pale Ale on keg at 4.3%. Both in flavour and bitterness, that felt a little underpowered. It was happily saved by a nice sugar dusting on the lips & some late juice.

But, Outstanding Beer Of The Day was;

Cloudwater, A Moment At Emmanuel Head, NE Pale on keg at (just) 3.5%. I will say, it was no head flat, and looked unappealing. But, it packed a lovely hop punch.
