Mother Of All Misunderstandings

Hallam 4 v FC Humber United 0
Northern Counties East Football League
Division One
Saturday 8 January 2022

That win, and more importantly a 90th minute Retford winner at North Ferriby, keeps Hallam top. Now with a four point lead. Horrendous rain overnight. I was supposed to be doing a Humberside Double Header. SUFC U18s v Hull City in the morning & FC Humber United in the afts. The eighteens at Shirecliffe was called off early doors. And I was surprised Hallam's 1000am inspection declared Sandygate on.

Indeed, we nearly had the Mother Of All Misunderstandings. We got up there early to drink the bar dry. As we passed the ticket hut we were told they were taking money, but the Ref was going to do another inspection when he arrived, and there'd be refunds if necessary.

Turns out the next guy through the hut was the Ref. He was ushered up to the top end sharpish. Although our vantage point in the bar didn't allow us a detailed look, as he passed North to South towards the Quagmire End, one could only fear the worst. Minutes later, there was a flurry of activity & I swear I heard a Hallam Official say it was OFF. I even texted the rest of the yet to arrive Carrier Bag Firm to warn them. Luckily I also included the magic phrase - "but fuck it, we're staying in the bar anyway". So, they naturally all turned up regardless. To find I'd bollocksed it up and it was ON anyway. FFS.

During the game, one of the Baggers was sat near "one of the Crosspool Ale Makers Society brewers". As a result, worrying rumours that Crosspool will no longer be canning beers began to circulate.

Now seems like a good time to quote The Inspiral Carpets, with lyrics delivered by Mark E Smith.

"There are already all those rumours circulating around
I think you should remember whose side you are on"

We need them beers, man. The Can Bar was shut an' all (presumably because of the weather). Nevermind, we snaffled as many…

Crosspool Ale Makers Society, On The Loose, New World IPA at 5.1% as we could source.

Fairly routine for Hallam. FC Humber U's are second bottom & look to be struggling. But, big salutes all round, they really kept at it. Their keeper, David Howard, was immense. Pulling off save after save. Three up at HT from a James Gregory brace & one from Kieran Watson, and Hallam were cruising. One on 75 from Richard Patterson brought it home. Everyone back in the 1860 Bar to see if there's any Crosspool Cans left (spoiler - there were).

Hallam have now scored 93 goals in just 25 games. And are now NINE games undefeated stretching back to the end of October. Just need the Crosspool Cans to sign a permanent deal in the January Window & we couldn't be happier.
