Keeper First, Kitman Second

Hallam 4 v Parkgate 5
Northern Counties East Football League
Division One
Saturday 5 February 2022

"Have you put your lottery numbers on?"

That is what my never met before neighbour in the stand said to me as the full-time whistle whistled. That was because I'd been loudly proclaiming "Back 5-4" for a lot of the latter stages.

Absolutely mad up a Sandygate. Horizontal rain scything into the main stand. The linesman's channel was a quagmire. There was a kerfuffle at half time and my mate couldn't reclaim his place on the back row. He'd been dry on that one. But, then got soaked on the row in front.

The main Hallam firm, The Shed End, have sort of decided their M.O. is gently abusing & winding up opposition players. Me, I'd prefer them to lose all that nonsense learned behaviour from pro football nonsense. And major on songs supporting their own team & players. But, I think they know they have to take it once given.

The winning fifth went in on 93. In front of The Shed. Scenes, man. I swear the Parkgate keeper was second man up there for the celebrations in front of The Shed. After the Kitman!!!

Hallam's climb to the top of the table has increasingly attracted local media attention. Boss Craig Denton was interviewed on Radio Sheffield on Friday. Amongst other things, he was quizzed about preparations in the event of promotion. Maybe that caught him off guard. Maybe he couldn't recall the platitudes about - always looking to strengthen the squad. What he actually majored on was - the new can bar at the bottom of the slope!!!

Essentially, because of the constant threat of frankly fucking appalling weather, they've replaced an exposed to the elements bar with one of those beige kiosks you'd expect to see at the entrance to a car park. I guess they've got a heater in there for the two lads who run it. You can't see in as you approach it because of the condensation. But, sure enough, as you step gingerly through the mud, a little window is slid open. "Can I help you?"

Inevitably, they can. Tins of Crosspool Ale Makers Society On The Loose New World IPA at 5.1% please. (fyi £3.75 in the main bar, two for a fiver in the "new" can bar).
