SUFC 2021/22 Game #63

I think it's fair to say there has been an amount of gratuitous, but nevertheless enjoyable, ground ticking going on. Just the way life was for a couple of weeks.

Boreham Wood's Meadow Park was my 392nd tick, Fisher's St Paul's my 393rd.

Very welcoming, and free entry, up at Boreham Wood. "Go that way, find a seat, and enjoy your evening". A hi vizzed steward was handing teamsheets out. I grabbed one, took a pic, and handed the sheet to a Gooner Carrier Bagger, sent from central casting at nearby Elstree Studios. He'd syphoned his own teamsheet into a substantial plastic box folder thingy. "Here mate" I said "can you use this one as well?"

He thanked me "I'll give it to my friend, he often gets here late & misses out" he said, snaffling it into his plastic box thingy.

Sure enough, his mate arrived at kick off. "Don't forget to get your teamsheet" Gooner CBF explained, pointing to the steward. Making no fucking mention of the "spare" he'd already got. Good Lad…

The first game I've ever seen at this top level U23. Enjoyable enough. Although I found it all a bit sterile. The superb playing surface seemed to encourage the lads to try all the little tricks n flicks, all of 'em. All about the individual skills, rather than the team game.

I did all the research. But, I couldn't really identity anything that looked like an interesting beer destination. Plumped for the 'spoons on the way to the ground.

The Hart & Spool
148-150 Shenley Rd, Borehamwood WD6 1EQ

A bit grim if I'm honest. Also worth remarking. Looked for all the world like an existing Pub that had been "converted" into a Wetherspoons.

Tring Brewery Co, Going Loco, English Bitter on Cask at 3.9%

Excellent English Bitter. More Bitter than English. Toffee. Something burnt. And a bit of pucker up Bitter.

Less individual technical skill on display. But a great, rocking three all at Fisher over in Bermondsey/Rotherhithe. Fisher one nil, 'ton equaliser on HT. Kennington 2-1 & then 3-2 up. Before The Fish squared it on 81. All in front of small, but passionate, gangs of fans from both teams.

Simple, local, beer solution in the Fisher Clubhouse. Cans from Anspach & Hobday (Croydon) dispensed from cool boxes laden with ice.

Anspach & Hobday, The Pale Ale from a tin at 4.4%

Great pale. A bit of orange, Gentle Bitter.

Anspach & Hobday, The Lager from a tin at 4.7%

Nice Helles style lager. Lots of left over sugar from the malt. Maybe a touch too bitter from the hops. But, still a lovely footy beer.

And. Finally. The rollercoaster continues at HQ. This time, I felt we were completely outplayed in the first half. Pressed to hell. Rushed all the time. No outlet. Hit & chase. Not a great deal better after the break. But, a goal, they have to expand a bit. It looks different then.
