Velocity Cup (Isthmian League) 4th Round
Thursday 10 March 2022
I mean alright. People are allowed to go on a Big Night Out with loads of mates. I mean alright. Pubs and Bars are allowed to be busy, sell ale & make money. And, I don't really know why. But, that irks me. I walked into BrewDog Outpost, Tower Hill (at maybe 5 bells), every table had a - Reserved From Such n Such O'Clock ticket on it. That just irks. It just feels spine tinglingly unwelcoming. Like they're trying to squeeze you in. Like you're an inconvenience to them. Just let people walk in & pile in FFS.
Lots & lots of other reasons to hate on BrewDog at the mo' anyway (Google 'em). But, I just couldn't find a plausible beer destination out in Basildon/Pitsea. So, I decided to settle for a pre Fenchurch St departure bar. And BrewDog it was. (Probably self barring myself from that one now).
There is of course a saving grace. The beers are good. The guests are good. They've got their own Brewing Kit in Outpost.
BrewDog Outpost Tower Hill, Double Down, Double Dry Hopped Micro IPA on Keg at 2.9%
I'm loving Table Beers at present. (See Abbeydale Restoration after every home game). This one from BrewDog was great. Azacca and Mosaic hops.
This Cup Tie at Bowers & Pitsea's Len Salmon Stadium was the 390th different ground I've watched a game on.
Both teams play in the Step 3 Isthmian League. There was plenty of talk around the ground of BPFC playing lots of youngsters in the cup, and they'd had a league game just two days previous on the Tuesday. The tannoy announcement at the end even praised "the under 23s for a great effort".
Anyhoo, thoroughly enjoyable game. Cheshunt goals on 39 & 78 put them in the hat. (Not really, it'd already been "or" drawn, they go to Haringey Borough in the next round). The day made more enjoyable by Billy Bragg's A13 Trunk Road To The Sea blaring out of the PA at HT.
Down to Grays Thurrock
And rather near Basildon
Pitsea, Thundersley, Hadleigh, Leigh-On-Sea
Chalkwell, Prittlewell
Southend's the end
I'd actually had to walk through a very dimly lit subway under the A13 to get to the ground.
Cheshunt won the battle of the fans. Very boisterous and active. Lots of variety in the songs. Drum. Pissed as parrots. But Bowers & Pitsea won the battle of the flags.
"Fire In The Belly, Head In The Freezer"
I am afraid to report, with industrial brands only, the Bowers & Pitsea clubhouse had No Plausible Ale
