SUFC 2022/23 Game #14
"Did you not want to respect and honour her dead Maj with a minute's silence then Phil?"
Context innit.
No, I did not want to respect the late Queen just before a fucking football match starts. That would be absurd. I don't go to football to be reminded of all the grime n grief. I don't go to football to read the latest in The Death Gazette. I go to football to forget things, not to remember them. I go to football to lose my shit. And, gloriously, in the year of our Lord 90+4, I got my chance. Long Live Rhian Brewster.
Went the day well? It started well. Cast your minds back to Saturday 3 May 2003. Swansea City were at home to Hull City. The Vetch Field in them days. League Two/4th Division. The Swans had to win this last game of the season to avoid being relegated to The Conference. And, win they did, 4-2, to preserve their league status.
Keep that in mind while I explain my shock when some Swansea old fella in the pub said;
"The Swans, they never been in the real doldrums have they though"
WTF. Anyway, his mate had the right of reply.
"Not apart from that year they had to win to stay in the leagues…"
That reply was in
No Sign Bar
56 Wind St, Swansea SA1 1EG
A long, but thin, very welcoming bar in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. I had;
Pitchfork Ales (Hewish, Somerset), Pitchfork, Golden Ale on Cask at 4.3%.
I started using (in earnest) an App called Untappd on 5 April 2018. It's sort of Facebook for beer. You "check in" beers you've drunk, and where you've drunk 'em. You can put a picture on, give the beer a score, write some notes, tag friends, like (toast). As I say, Facebook for beer. For years, I kidded myself that I was using Untappd to find interesting bars & beers. But, come on, we're the Carrier Bag Firm. I use Untappd to signal - look at me & my interesting and varied nature.
When quizzed about beer by civilians, I have a mantra. I am no longer interested in QUANTITY. I served under the unsustainable units flag for decades. As you'd imagine, I like a nice beer. But, in a way, I am not all that interested in QUALITY. What really floats my boat is VARIETY. Try 'em all.
I sometimes ask friends who don't try different beers - how many different beers do you think there are in the world. Some weird and wonderful answers to that one. Anyway. Honesty best policy. I use Untappd because I'm a Beer Ticker. You buy 'em, you drink 'em, you tick 'em.
That Pitchfork beer was the two and a half thousand different beer I've drank and ticked since April 2018. That's (now) 2,503 different beers in 1,622 days. That's 1.54 different beers a day. Three different beers every two days. May we live through interesting times.
I will now, momentarily, return to the theme of respect.
BeerRiff Brewing Co
Pilot House Wharf, Swansea SA1 1UN
is essentially the best bar in Swansea. Great location down on the marina. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. An incredible and varied fifteen on Keg. From which I harvested Two Ticks. But, this disrespectful sign can fuck off any time it likes.
Grow Up.
In a new venture, we spent the weekend on an Archeological Dig in Pembrokeshire. The Carrier Bag Firm loved ribbing us about that. Loved it.
"Did you find any old programmes Phil?"
On a glorious, long into the small hours, night of football, beer & bollock talking, that passes as humour if you're proper CBF.
Context innit.
