Bradford District FA Senior Cup QF
Saturday 20 January 2024
Played at Wyke Sports Village
Ground Tick #468
NBDR No Beer Don't Read
There was weather. I was at Sheffield United U18s in the morning. Here's the “road” to my 468th Ground Tick at Wyke Sports Village.
Friday 19 January 11:02am - SUFC U21 v Reading at Aldershot was called off. And, I had to start making my way back from the Carrier Bag Firm Annex in Islington. My Saturday targets now became the U18s at 11am and Hallam at 3pm.
Saturday 20 January 10:26am - I'm already at the Barnsley Academy as Hallam is called off. I quickly assess the options from Barnsley.
Saturday 20 January 09:29 - South Elmsall United Services was called off.
Saturday 20 January 09:54am - Emley was called off.
Saturday 20 January 10:01am - One of the CBF, not intending to be at Barnsley U18s, had targeted Whitchurch Alport (Shropshire). That was called off.
Saturday 20 January 10:17am - Ponte Colls was called off.
Saturday 20 January 10:41am - one of the CBF supports Sheffield FC, I was toying with a No Tick Lift to that one with him. When it was called off.
Saturday 20 January 11am - we have kicky ball, as the U18s get underway at Barnsley. None of the Carrier Bag Firm are actually watching the game. We were all scouring the airwaves for a 2pm or 3pm kick off that we could get in as a Double Header.
Saturday 20 January 11:05am - the CBF put together a detailed business case for a new App which lists games to be played on 4g rather than grass, with more chance of surviving the weather. We're gonna CrowdFund that one.
Saturday 20 January 11:09am - the Bagger who had to abandon Whitchurch Alport turns up at Barnsley, his Plan B. He's come in the motor. A whole new world of ticking suddenly opens up.
Saturday 20 January 12:14pm - the Sheffield FC supporting Bagger was now targeting Dronfield Town. I could have blagged a No Tick Lift with him. But that is now called off.
Saturday 20 January 12:34pm - Barnsley U18 are one up, and the Young Blades miss a penalty. The only Ticks In Town are Jubilee Sports in the Sheffield &: Hallamshire County Senior, with the Sheffield FC and Dronfield Town cancelled Bagger. Or Wyke Wanderers in the Bradford District FA Senior Cup with the Whitchurch Alport cancelled Bagger on his Plan B.
Saturday 20 January 12:50pm - Full Time at Barnsley U18s. One Each. Let's get in that fucking car to Wyke.
Saturday 20 January 2pm - Kick Off at Wyke Sports Village. Tick #468. This. Is. How. We. Fucking. Live.
Wyke is in West Yorkshire. I have a very small number of Blog readers from that land of horses where you don't expect them. Upon seeing on my So Meed that I was in Teacake Territory, one of them tried to explain Wyke Wanderers were playing FIELDS not FIELD.
I mean. Let's dissect that one. There's a place. In Bradford. An outlying district. A village. A ‘burb. The people who lived there in ancient times were proud of where they lived. They decided to give it a name respectful of that Civic Pride. They weighed it up and down. Assessed the options.
“Mud”
Didn't do it justice they felt.
“Place where Horses frolic”
Was simply too much of a mouthful. So, reminding you this is in West Yorkshire, they went Genius Level. We'll call it;
“Field”
And. Now. Centuries later. Upon realising that name might not quite capture what they were after. They're fucking arguing the Toss with me whether it's FIELD or FIELDS.
West Yorkshire Ladies & Gentlemen.
