The story of the day was told by the way the teams play. NZ chanced their arm in the morning & got away with it. England carefully built their innings & got burnt by the new ball.

Crazy in the morning. Broad & Stokes digging it in, trying to bounce the tailenders. Stand tall, make some room, play your shots. Suddenly 50 on in no time. Madness.

Anderson to 400 on Day 1. Cook passes Gooch on Day 2. Here's how much cricket I've seen. I saw Gooch make his ODI debut.

A lovely long ovation for Cook from the Headingley crowd. Not a patch on the scenes in the Old Trinitians Club House in Kandy when Murali got to 709 to pass Warne. I was there then an all. Suffice to say, I have never seen so many bars of chocolate in one place. Before or since.

The pessimistic Northern Monkey in me wonders whether Lyth has got it in him. Cook's partner merry go round ain't helped. Carbs, Compton, Root, Sam Robson, the Trott experiment. But, all he can do is make the runs. Superb Century. Before the collective wheels came off.

Game on.

Dry Day.
