This Blog in praise of Beer.
That Abbeydale Voyager series of cask IPAs is superb. I had Number #13 last night at the Post Mortem of the Sheffield Pig v Pig Derby in The Rising Sun. I've checked what lists I've got in the old Carrier Bag. I've had five. Three of those were right up there. Best cask North of 5.5% IPAs I've had. Partly, I don't know how they do it. They all have a very similar look. Heavily Hazy. Not quite orange juice orange - but leaning that way. They all have the same key properties. Rich & deep. Fresh & effervescent. Yet, they use very different Hop Combos in each release. It's fucking alchemy or some shit.

The flavours within that hop forward richness can be very different. The Sorachi Ace & Lime for eg. But, there's a consistency, similarity, core. My head gets a little weary at times. Like the old Cloudwater V days. Great beer, why bother going for a slightly different version. But, the Voyager series just seems a belting way of showcasing hop flavours.

Abbeydale, Voyager #13, Centennial, Citra, Mosaic on cask at 5.6%.
Very rich & tangy first up. The hop flavours fizz in, stay put & go big in the finish.

That was a we are where we are game. Possession, pace, passing, piss poor up top. I'm not worried. I don't feel Wednesday particularly came to defend. I think our game forced them to defend. And, they defended well at times under a barrage. On about 38 mins, they got the ball, passed it a bit, gained a bit of control & got a built attack into our half. I remarked that was the first time I remember them doing that.

I see Norwood is spraying cross field balls about. Fair enough. Plan A is possess, pass, overlap. Plan B is get the top two running the channel. Plan C might as well be switch play with big booming balls. However, I do think we're good at playing to our strengths. Our strength is possess, pass, overload, recycle. There is an issue if you're overloading - only to see Norwood boom it out to the underloaded Freeman or Stevens. But, options is options.

I also felt we had a deliberate tactic of McGoldrick coming, back to goal, towards Norwood, Fleck, Basham or other ball carrier, deep. But, then getting Freeman to fill in ahead of him. It was intriguing, funky, but not a great attacking success. It did bring McGoldrick into the game a lot though. But, perversely, isolated Freeman a bit wide, high, right.

McGoldrick - False Ten - you can have that on me.

I'd watch us play like that all season & fucking repeat. We'll get more games over the line than we won't. And, it's a joy to watch.
