What World Cup Break?

Sheffield United U21 1 v Crystal Palace U21 2
Premier League Cup, Group E
Monday 14 November 2022
Played at Bramall Lane
SUFC 2022/23 Game #33

What fucking World Cup break?

Thoroughly enjoyable game at The Lane. Palaaarce were down to ten men from just before half time, immediately after they'd gone one up. Despite a United equaliser, Palace went back ahead 2-1 straight away. Towards the end, the Young Blades camped out in The Eagle's Nest. But, the Palace defending was superb. Finley Potter banged one against the post on 90+3. And the United Kids dropped to their knees as the whistle went.

This is the Premier League Cup Group Stage. Essentially being played during this break. It's a chance for Category 2 Academies (us) to mix it with the Big Lads from Category 1 (and some from Category 3). A group of four (with Newcastle United & Bristol City). Play each other home and away. With some neat ground ticking if you can get it in. We play Newcastle away at the former home of West Allotment Celtic. (I won't be able to make that one - off on an adventure).

At this stage, our first team are either in Qatar or (correctly) resting up. Maybe we'll see some of them in the Premier League Cup nearer the restart. And, we've also taken the opportunity to send ever more youngsters out to short non-league loans. That's. What. We. Do. So, no excuses from me about a weakened team. The lot out there did excellent and played a full part in a great game.

Big Jordan in goal. And in the second half as sweeper. And in the last five as striker!!!

The excellent on the night Finley Potter in the middle of a three and with the OneLove Armband. Connor Barratt on his right, Nix Gomis his left. Jili Buyabu wide left. Sachdev wide right. Frankie Maguire, Owen Hampson and Andre in midfield. Louie Louie Marsh and Williams T up top

I thought Connor was given the runaround at times and had a difficult night of it. Marsh was a bit quiet compared to the high standards he's set. Maybe Maguire a bit quiet too. Although a lot of play goes through him.

Minor quibbles. I thought Sai Sachdev was excellent. I thought Owen Hampson was excellent. I thought Potter was excellent. Potter was in a physical battle all night. The Palace kids seemed to be grabbing him, and wrestling him. He more than held his own. Very calm and matter-of-fact. He was also Zone Man on a lot of corners. On 38, he even found the legs to burst through the line & the South London critter had to put an arm out to pull him back.

Owen Hampson had two good penalty shouts on 61 and 73. And, he'd bagged the equaliser on 74 with a mazy run into the box off the left and a calm across the keeper finish with his right foot.

That equalised a great goal by Palace on 42. Not exactly against the run of play, but United has held their own and were finishing the half strongly. A bit of carving in the box and a lovely low shot to Jordan's right.

As mentioned, a straight red just moments later as matey has gone right through Brooks. He can't have any complaints. Although, obvs, he did - picking verbal rucks with the fourth official, Louie Marsh & Antwoine Hackford before he got tunneled.

But, FFS, Utd conceded a sloppy 'un just after the Hampson goal. Rattled in through/past/round Amissah at the post. To set up that magnificent all hands to the pumps & barricades finish. Felt like we had chance after chance.

Hackford got on at 59. And Gaxha at 64 as we juggled and shaped for a leveler against ten men.

Needed a lie down after that lot. (No beer).
