Carlos? The Jackal?

Sheffield United U21 0 v Barnsley U21 1
Professional Development League
Tuesday 13 February 2024
Played at Chesterfield
SUFC 2023/24 Game #49

When the January Transfer Window closes, the Premier League and the EFL publish revised squad lists for their clubs. When those revised squad lists are published, the Carrier Bag Firm scrutinise them for oddities. I'm saying scru-tin-ise.

So. On the Sheffield United list. Published by the Premier League. “We” spotted a player the CBF didn't know about. A kid who has been through the Chelsea and West Ham United Youth systems. A kid who has played Under 21 internationals for Gibraltar. Indeed, a kid who has already made his debut in the EFL Championship. But. Mainly a kid we'd never fucking heard of. Who now appeared to be part of the (wider) Sheffield United squad.

Please welcome - Carlos Peliza Richards.

90th minute substitute for Derby County, in April 2022, against Fulham.

Of course, this being a CBF tale, it's not as straightforward as - we appear to have “signed” Carlos. And, with no fanfare at that. Because…

If you look at the squad lists published by the EFL (at the close of the January Window). Then you will also find Carlos listed in the official Derby County squad.

What's that you ask? No. No, I've no real idea how all that works. Yes. Yes, I'm “sure” there's a very simple explanation. Yes, he is listed in the official squads of both Sheffield United AND Derby County. No. No, I'm afraid I don't know if that's even allowed. Can I guess, you ask.

“Some fucker has sent the wrong list, to the wrong place, at the wrong time.”

And. To cap it all. Carlos, he of multiple clubs, was secretly named on tonight's Teamsheet as #15 Trialist.

Recap he's named in our squad list, and Derby's squad list, and we're calling him Trialist. He came on for Oliver Arblaster on 60 minutes.

It was a tight game. Barnsley looked physically stronger. And I felt they just about deserved the win. Recent (genuine) signing Sam Curtis played at Right Wing Back again. The best way I can describe it is - he's playing as a chess piece. Currently, he doesn't look suited to a five to me. Constantly taking up a very wide position exactly on the half way line. As if he's been told to stand there. Very little flexibility. Not much of the up & downing required of a modern wing back.

Although to be fair. The CBF couldn't really concentrate on the game. Not with a Squad List & Trialist anomaly unfolding in front of our peepers.
