The Dead Trousers

Holzheimer SG 0 v Fortuna Düsseldorf 3
Friendly
Sunday 7 July 2024
Played at Ludwig Wolker Anlage, Neuss
Ground Tick #495
German Beer Ticks up to #134

If I've understood that correctly, Holzheimer SG have won a competition amongst local lower league clubs to host the Fortuna Düsseldorf big boys in pre-season. Fortuna waiving all fees and expenses. And all proceeds going to the lower league side.

And, it was a 3k sell out a few days before the game. Announcements of “no tickets on the day”. The thing I found a little odd was that it was not hosted on Holzheimer’s own ground. But, rather “promoted” on what looked like a very well maintained municipal Athletics park.

AnyRoadUp. Holzheimer played last season in Landesliga Niederrhein Gruppe 1, that's Tier 6 of the German pyramid. Fortuna Düsseldorf will remain in Bundesliga 2. for next season. They finished third in the league. The way the German play offs work is that they ended up playing Bundesliga side VfL Bochum in a relegation/promotion play off. Fortuna won their away leg 3-0. But then Royally fucked it up by losing the home leg 3-0. And going out on Penalties!!!

Fortuna have the dubious record of being the only German club to fall from the Bundesliga to the fourth tier (1997 to 2002). And then be promoted all the way back up again.

Die Toten Hosen are a German punk rock group formed in 1982. Their name is a sort of stereotypical play on words punk theme loosely meaning - “nothing happening” “boring”. But, I'm not going to lie, the Carrier Bag Firm have always followed their progress because a more literal translation of Die Toten Hosen is … The Dead Trousers.

Die Toten Hosen are from D-Dorf and have always been Fortuna fans. During the very dark days, they donated money to help sign players, became shirt sponsors, and arranged their own tours and sponsorship to help Fortuna Düsseldorf out financially.

It was noticeable at today's game that many of the replica shirts and other merchandise had Die Toten Hosen logos and tie ins. Many of which were being sold in the mobile club shop truck which pitched up on the grass bank.

Also pitching up on the grass banks were a variety of food trucks (yes, yes, yes, there was Sausage) and some beer trucks. From which, I was able to harvest an Industrial Beer Tick.

Warsteiner, Premium Pilsener at 4.8%

Not much of a game if I'm honest. Lacked intensity. Typical get something in the legs affair. Something, something, something Dead Trousers and Dead Legs…
