SUFC 2019/20 Game 1
And….
We're back in the room. A ten day Close Season following that frustrating England U21 campaign. So, welcome here to the traditional pre season opener at Stocksbridge Park…..
Hang on. Go previous. It seems the Carrier Bag Firm are at something called North Ferriby.

As recently as 2016, North Ferriby UNITED were in The National League. The same level as Chesterfield are now. But, in March 2019, after 85 years, NFUFC were wound up in The Courts over a debt of less than 8 Grand. Eight Fucking Grand, Eighty Five Fucking Years. Something, something, coming soon to a ground near you, Premier League, Saudi owner, something, needs work….
(Phil, not the time Mate I hear you say)
So, today is a Big Day for our North Ferriby Muckers. This is the first day of the rest of their lives. This is the No United, simple North Ferriby FC, the Phoenix Club, Legacy FC. They'll soon be starting their season in the Northern Counties East League, Division One, Pyramid 10. The same level as Hallam. And, they couldn't have a had a better start. A simple deep cross, clean header, from a corner. To put them ahead after just 48 seconds. That turned out to be the only goal of the game.
As I've played the game back in my head, I'll put it down as - normal pre season. The Young Blades made a lot of changes. A lot of players got cobwebs off and game time. North Ferriby had very few chances after the first minute. Had that been a league game, you'd have come away very disappointed to have lost. It didn't feel like we dominated. But, it felt like we could easily have got back into it. Towards the end, it got quite lively. Lots of backs to the wall, desperate defending stuff from the Ferribians.
A lot of the fun to be had was in The Identity Parade. Maybe it was cock up, rather than conspiracy. But not all the players were as listed on the teamsheet. It's too early for a full roll call audit. But, here goes nothing.
Facts. George Cantrill has left permanently for Guiseley. Oliver Greaves has gone on loan to Barrow. Rhys Norrington-Davies has gone on loan to Rochdale. Jake Eastwood has gone on loan to Scunthorpe. Kyron Gordon has just signed a new deal.
Presumably - with the first team squad. Tyler Smith & Regan Slater have returned from their loan deals and are presumably with the first team. As, presumably, is Marcus Dewhurst.
Presumably - still at it. Jordan Doherty (Tampa Bay Rowdies) & David Parkhouse (Derry City) are out on loan in countries who are still in their league season.
So. Deh deh deh. Him him him. Check check tick. (Mind whirrs, overlaid with the sound of comedy cogs). That leaves the - oooohhhh, I wonder where he is - list as;
Sam Graham
Simeon Oure
Jake Bennett
Keenan Ferguson
@ me if you think I've missed anyone.
There were three new(ish) names on the teamsheet. Ashton Hall did play for the U18s last season. At that stage, he was Presumed Trialist. Recently, he's been at Matlock Town. Look, I'm not The Oracle. He's either still on trial or he's now in The Academy. The end.
Teddy Perkins is a name we haven't seen before. He set up as Right Wingback in a five. Google has him previously in the Leyton Orient & Burnley systems.
But, the most impressive of the newbies was Tristan Cover. Basically, he set up as Left Wingback. But, it was his wide left attacking threat which caught the eye. Strong & tenacious. One of those thick legs, low centre of gravity players. Difficult to shake off the ball. Always looking to win it back. And a good bit of awareness & close control skill to play the angles & slip his mates in. Look, it's not science. I've seen a good few Trialists over my days. That was one of the more accomplished give him a run, see how he goes, performances. Google has him as being in the Fulham system.
Also. Newly signed, and Captain for the day, KY Gordon looked the business. I've said it before. Young lad, he's growing into himself. Not much left of the Bambi Giraffe On Ice with added arms & legs all over the shop. Beginning to look like an athlete. He's not an absolute beast. So, he has to be quick over the ground, read the game well & just generally … well … get in the way. Another one off the Shirecliffe Centre Half Production Line.
Otherwise, no harm done, some miles in for the Familiar Faces - Sheppeard, Boyes, Broadbent, Brunt, Ompreon, Belehouan, Neal, York, Young.
And, of course, another Big Season coming up for Stephen Mallon. Fourth on the trot now, or something like that. Back from a proper stint for Central Coast Mariners in Australia, and the Ireland U21s in Toulon. Copy and paste pre season for Stephen. Needs to keep injury free & impose himself on games more. Because he's a tricky, ball at his feet, this way, that way, attacking player, you will him to succeed. Because, if he succeeds, players like that, gold. Too early to say on the basis of that 45. Looked fit and strong. Certainly wasn't shy of trying to get a shot off.
I was just a little bit disappointed with The Beer Day. We sailed past Ferriby on the train into Hull. To hit the Atom Brewing Co bar in the centre. Maybe it's just pre season malaise. Maybe it's just reality not quite matching expectation. I needed something absolutely belting to kick my season live. Nice enough beers. But, belters you ain't. Long, double figure, list of keg beers. Near handful of handpulls. Lots of their own, plus some nice guests. I had the Mango Sour & three IPAs/Pales. The Hoppers all came up a bit yellow & gloopy. I caught myself yearning for a nice, residual sugar, brown 'un. Why can't they make beer like they used to …. etc.
Atom, Mango Litmus at 3.7%. I'm glad I tried that. But, I often find myself thinking - why haven't they made that more sour, or more fruity, or both. That would have benefited from a good, extra Mango Whack. I enjoyed it though.
Atom, Catalyst (American Pale) at 5.4%. That had a lot going for it. Overall, it felt a bit light. Although, the flavour stayed and it grew on me as I ploughed in.
Track Brewing Co/Finback Brewery Collab, One Track Mind, New England IPA at 7.2%. As advertised. A lot of gloop & juicy capers going on. The bitterness felt good, but everything needed more sweetness to bounce off.
Which leaves. Outstanding Beer Of The Day.

Atom, Resonance (American IPA) at 6%. Thick pineapple smell. Just a little bit of that survived into the taste. The bitterness came in heavy. But, stayed mainly mandarin orange. A thick, chewy, serious beer.
